Brazil’s Maracana stadium future under threat after looting

Rio de Janeiro’s famous Maracana stadium was broken into, sparking a fresh round of talks on its future.

Football officials in the Brazilian city have called for urgent action to prevent further damage to the city’s famous stadium.

It is reported that windows were smashed and items like fire extinguishers, hoses, televisions and even a bronze bust of Mario Filho, the journalist after whom the stadium was named, were stolen.

The stadium, which has been abandoned and ransacked since the Olympics in September, is at the centre of dispute over who should maintain it.
