Germany sees drop in asylum seekers

Germany says 280,000 asylum seekers arrived in the country last year, a drop of more than 600,000 on 2015.

The decrease was due to the decision by Balkan countries to close off the migrant route towards Western Europe and the deal between the EU and Turkey, according to the German Interior Minister.

The total number of asylum applications in 2016 was actually higher than in 2015; however, the majority of claims were from people who had arrived the previous year.
