Hurricane Florence begins to hammer US east coast

It is carrying winds of nearly 160 kph, storm surges and heavy rain.
Forecasters are warning people to expect catastrophic flooding in parts of the Carolinas.
Florence has been downgraded to a category 1 storm, but experts caution that it remains life-threatening.
