UK ministers say Brexit transition cannot be back door to staying in EU

The UK will need a transition period to help businesses soften its exit from the European Union, two senior ministers said on Sunday.

In a joint interview with the Sunday Telegraph, Philip Hammond and Liam Fox stressed that any deal would not be indefinite or a “back door” to staying in the EU.

Their comments signal a truce between rival factions in Prime Minister Theresa May’s cabinet.

May’s Brexit strategy had come under scrutiny ever since the election in June weakened her authority and exposed differences over Britain’s departure from the EU.
