Zambia to drop treason charges against opposition leader

Zambia plans to drop treason charges against opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema on Monday.

A deal has reportedly been brokered by Commonwealth secretary-general Patricia Scotland, the government and legal sources.

Hakainde Hichilema, the leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND) and five others were arrested in April and charged with treason after their convoy blocked President Edgar Lungu’s motorcade.

Hichilema’s trial was due to begin on Monday but the prosecution will now approach the court to discontinue the case.
